Charleroi are tracking Lyon right-back Steeve Kango for a loan, but he is not a priority and nothing is close.

According to Le Progres, the 19-year-old has slipped down OL’s pecking order despite signing his first professional deal this summer. The loan arrival of Zachary Athekame has left him third choice, behind the Swiss and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Kango impressed with surprise starts in the Europa League last 16 against Celta Vigo late last season. Lyon hope to secure a loan without an option to buy, as with Enzo Molebe’s season-long move to Lausanne Sport.

Charleroi have begun the Jupiler League with three wins from three, yet two factors mean any move is far from agreed.

First, Kevin Van De Kerckhof, the Algerian international formerly of Metz and Bastia, has begun strongly with two goals. With 55 Ligue 1 appearances, 23 in Belgium’s top flight and 29 in Ligue 2, the 30-year-old would be difficult to dislodge from Mario Kohnen’s XI.

He could operate higher on the right, while Kango can also cover at left-back.

Secondly, Charleroi are pursuing two other options at right-back, so Kango is not their first choice. The Lyon defender also has interest in France, including from two Ligue 2 clubs.
