Charlotte FC have added to their midfield options with the signing of Brecht Dejaegere on a free transfer from French side Toulouse. He joins through the 2025 Major League Soccer season.
Dejaegere was the captain at Toulouse, and is no stranger to scoring goals after amassing over 35 along with 50 assists while playing in France and Belgium. The 32-year-old was a key figure for the French outfit, leading them to Coupe de France glory in their 5-1 win over Nantes.
Now, the midfielder joins a Charlotte team that has had some bright moments in their second season in MLS - but continue to struggle as they sit 12th in the Eastern Conference table on 26 points. Dejaegere joins a midfield that already has Ashley Westwood, Derrick Jones, and Scott Arfield, who recently joined the club from Scottish Premier League side Rangers.
"Brecht is a playmaking central midfielder with attacking instinct, and we’re excited to welcome him to Charlotte. He has spent close to a decade as a key figure at clubs in Belgium and France where he has captained teams and won trophies," Charlotte sporting director Zoran Krneta said.
"His experience across multiple leagues and European competition will add even more leadership in our locker room alongside other established veteran leaders. Brecht will add a different dimension to our midfield as we continue to reinforce the squad in the summer transfer window."
Since MLS' secondary transfer window is now open, Dejaegere could make his debut for Charlotte as soon as this weekend on July 15 against Montreal, pending his fitness levels.
