Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth are among the clubs keen on a deal to sign Tyrese Shade from Burton Albion

Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic have both been given a boost in their chase of Burton Albion forward Tyrese Shade.

It was exclusively revealed by FLW earlier this month that the two Championship sides are both keen on a deal for the forward, along with Lincoln City after the Imps' historic promotion to the second-tier.

Shade scored nine goals from 38 appearances in League One last season, with the team coming 17th in the table.

But there is now speculation over his future with the club as we approach the final two weeks of the transfer window.

The 26-year-old made the move to the Brewers last summer from Eastleigh, and he enjoyed a strong transition from non-league football to the third tier.

And he could now be set for another jump up to the second division between now and the 1 September deadline.

Burton boss Gary Bowyer has confirmed that it’s more likely than not that Shade will depart the club before the market shuts on 1 September, suggesting that they are actively looking at targets to replace him.

He believes that the likes of Lorent Tolaj and Dom Ballard both going to Bristol City this summer indicate there aren’t many top strikers left in League One, so he expects a few offers to arrive in the next couple of weeks for Shade.

“No. No I wouldn’t have thought so,” said Bowyer, via the BBC.

“If you look at the strikers in League One (that have left this summer), (Lorent) Tolaj gone, (Dom) Ballard gone and there have been others.

“So there’s not many top, top strikers left and he’s a top, top striker in my opinion, who has got the ability to go higher.

“I look forward to receiving several bids in the next three weeks or so.

“We’re going to have to replace him and still bring in another one, maybe two in as well in that position.

“There’s a lot of work to do.”

Shade was a member of the Leicester City academy, which led to him going out on loan to Walsall in 2021/21, where he made 39 appearances in League Two.

But he was released by the Foxes upon his return from his loan spell, which led to his switch to Swindon Town.

He featured 63 times in League Two for the Robins, scoring on six occasions, before going on loan to Solihull Moors.

Shade signed for Eastleigh in 2024, where his impressive performances in the National League led him to Burton.

Charlton and Portsmouth fans’ reaction to Tyrese Shade interest

Some Charlton fans are not sure about the signing of Shade, and would be happy to see Portsmouth win the race to his signature..

However, others are more convinced that he could be a quality addition to Nathan Jones’ side for the season ahead.

Charlton have been backed to pursue the signing of the 26-year-old.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth have been told to instead push to sign Aribim Pepple from Plymouth Argyle to bolster their forward options.

Charlton and Portsmouth both began their seasons last weekend, with the former winning 2-1 against Derby County, while the latter lost 3-1 to QPR.

Tyrese Shade signing would be risky for Charlton and Portsmouth

Both Charlton and Portsmouth could use some extra goals for this season if they are to climb the Championship table, and get out of a potential relegation fight.

And Shade had a promising first year in League One last season, but it would still be a tough task for him to jump up to the second tier.

While Burton are resigned to his departure, it remains to be seen what the fee will be in order to convince them to cash in.

The forward certainly has the potential to make an impact at this level, but he is more likely to be a secondary option for either Pompey or the Addicks.
