The Addicks are set to sign a young Finnish talent

Charlton Athletic are reportedly closing in on a surprise move for Finnish midfielder Otto Tiitinen.

The Championship club are set to bring one of the Scandinavian country's most highly-rated young talents to The Valley.

The 18-year-old is understood to be on his way to Charlton from Finnish side Ilves, with the move set to provide another intriguing addition to Nathan Jones' squad as the Addicks look to build on their impressive start to the new Championship campaign.

According to Finnish football journalist Eetu Ikola, a deal is now close, with Tiitinen expected to complete his medical on Monday. Ikola reports that Tiitinen will join Charlton on loan with an option to buy.

Tiitinen, who was born in April 2008, has already gained experience at senior level despite his age.

He made his Veikkausliiga debut for Ilves in April 2025 at just 16 years old, scoring the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over HJK.

The midfielder subsequently signed a three-year professional contract with Ilves in January 2025, having progressed through the club's academy.

Tiitinen's emergence has attracted significant attention in Finland, with his performances earning him recognition as one of the country's most promising young players.

The central midfielder was named by The Guardian in its Next Generation 2025 list, which highlighted 60 of the best young talents in world football. He was the fourth Finnish player ever to make the prestigious selection.

He has also represented Finland at Under-15 and Under-16 level and has captained the country's Under-17 side, underlining the reputation he has built at youth international level.

Tiitinen's senior career began with Ilves II in 2024, before he stepped up to the first team.

He made 21 appearances for Ilves during the 2025 campaign, scoring once, while also featuring in European competition.

The move to England would represent the next stage of his development.

Tiitinen's proposed arrival also fits with Charlton's desire to improve their squad while maintaining a sustainable approach to recruitment.

The loan market looks to be of value for the Addicks, as Football League World exclusively revealed their pursuit of a temporary deal for Chiedozie Ogbene.

The Addicks finished 19th in the Championship last season after securing promotion back to the second tier, with managing director Jim Rodwell revealing that their playing budget was among the bottom quarter of the division.

Charlton have nevertheless made an excellent start to the 2026/27 campaign, winning both of their opening Championship fixtures and sitting third in the table ahead of Saturday's meeting with Preston North End.

Rodwell has spoken openly about the club's ambition to move forward while acknowledging the financial realities of Championship football.

He also confirmed that Charlton would welcome potential new investment to help shoulder the costs of competing at this level.

A loan deal with an option to buy for Tiitinen could consequently offer the Addicks an attractive route into a player with considerable potential without requiring a significant immediate outlay.
