Joe Aribo went from Charlton Athletic to Rangers for just £300,000, but his career with the Scottish giants, as well as Southampton and beyond, quickly took him far beyond what that compensation fee suggested.

The Nigerian midfielder helped Charlton Athletic win promotion from League One before becoming one of the most exciting young players in Scotland under Steven Gerrard.

He won the Scottish Premiership, scored in a Europa League final and earned a lucrative move to Southampton, where he would spend four years. Now, though, Joe Aribo is 30 years old and surprisingly finds himself without a club.

Aribo was instrumental as Charlton won promotion from League One in 2018/19, scoring 10 goals in 39 appearances and helping Lee Bowyer's side beat Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley. With his contract expiring, the Addicks were unable to keep hold of their emerging star, and Rangers moved quickly.

Because Aribo was moving across the border to Scotland and was under the age of 23, Rangers paid a compensation fee reported at only around £300,000 (BBC Sport). That looked like an extraordinary bargain even at the time, particularly given the level of interest in the midfielder.

Steven Gerrard made that clear, revealing via The Glasgow Times that clubs across Europe, the Premier League, and also the Championship had been chasing Aribo. Gerrard described him as mobile and dynamic, capable of bursting past players, creating chances, and scoring goals.

Rangers had seen something in the 22-year-old that plenty of other clubs had noticed too. Fans and others connected with Charlton could only watch as one of their most exciting young players left for a fraction of what his eventual value would become.

Rangers proved to be the perfect next step for Aribo. He spent three seasons at Ibrox, scoring 26 goals in 149 appearances and becoming an increasingly important figure in Gerrard's midfield. His biggest achievement came in 2020/21, when Rangers went unbeaten to win the Scottish Premiership title, ending Celtic's nine-year grip on the trophy.

His final Rangers campaign was arguably his most memorable. Aribo scored in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville, although Rangers ultimately lost on penalties. His performances had made him a Nigeria international and attracted Premier League attention, eventually earning him a move to Southampton.

According to BBC Sport, Aribo arrived for a reported £6 million, potentially rising to £10 million. Aribo never quite became the star Saints may have hoped for, but there were memorable moments.

He has seldom had big moments in front of goal for the Saints but scored in a 5-0 Championship win over Swansea City in December 2023 and struck against Leicester City at St. Mary's in October 2024 before Saints eventually lost 3-2. By the latter stages, however, his role diminished significantly.

After featuring seven times for Southampton during the first half of 2025/26, he joined Leicester on loan in February 2026. He played in just six matches as the Foxes were relegated to League One.

This is the part that makes Aribo's story particularly surprising now in 2026/27. Southampton confirmed in June 2026 that he would leave when his contract expired, bringing an end to a four-year spell on the south coast. At 30, the Nigeria international is now a free agent and looking for his next club.

That was in June, though, with the new season now well into September. It is a strange position for someone whose career trajectory once appeared to be heading relentlessly upwards. Aribo went from League One promotion winner with Charlton to Rangers, where he won a major domestic title and scored in a European final, before earning a sizeable Premier League transfer.

He also has experience across several different levels of the game and in numerous midfield roles. He has been deployed as a utility player in the Premier League, Championship, Scottish Premiership, and European competition, while also representing Nigeria internationally.

That wealth of experience should count for something as he searches for his next opportunity. Aribo may no longer be the exciting 22-year-old Gerrard signed for £300,000, but he is still a 30-year-old with 200-plus appearances for Rangers and Southampton combined, international experience, and a remarkable CV.

His next move will be an intriguing one, but it needs to come sooner rather than later after no pre-season and as October looms on the horizon.
