Charlton Athletic will have taken confidence from their victory over Birmingham City before the international break, but Stockport County will provide them with another tough test on Saturday.

Stockport have been impressive so far during their first season back in League One, and currently find themselves sixth in the table, above eighth-placed Charlton on goal difference in the final play-off spot.

The Addicks interviewed Dave Challinor before they appointed Michael Appleton as Dean Holden's replacement last season, before the Stockport boss went on to lead his side to promotion from League Two as champions.

The Hatters have not lost any of their six away fixtures in all competitions so far this season, so they will travel to The Valley with belief as they look to extend their unbeaten run to four games.

Charlton will need to keep an eye on a few players that could cause them problems this weekend, with a Stockport striker leading the way in League One when it comes to one particular stat.

While Louie Barry has scored five goals for Stockport in League One so far this season, Kyle Wootton may provide just as much of a threat to Charlton's defence on Saturday.

The 28-year-old has the highest xG out of every individual player in the third tier, having been expected to score five goals based on the chances he has had. The striker has made the joint-second most goal contributions in League One so far, with four goals and two assists to his name.

Lloyd Jones and Alex Mitchell will be up for the challenge having kept Alfie May quiet a fortnight ago, with the former Charlton striker third behind Wootton in terms of individual xG.

It could be an interesting battle between Wootton and Charlton's defence, with Birmingham City the only team to have conceded less xG than the Addicks in League One this term.

Stockport have the third-best record in the league when it comes to xG conceded, so they will feel as though they are just as solid as the Addicks in defence, and the fact that they have taken the most shots on target per match this season will give them belief that they can take all three points.

A few players could make the difference in Charlton Athletic vs Stockport County

Stockport have a few other danger-men who could be a threat alongside Barry and Wootton on Saturday, with Jack Diamond and Jayden Fevrier both ranking inside the top three for the most successful dribbles per 90 in League One so far this term.

However, despite Charlton having scored the sixth-fewest number of goals in the third tier this season, they do have players who can make a difference. Matty Godden has scored the second-most goals per 90 in League One, while super-sub Chuks Aneke has averaged the most shots per 90 during his cameos from the bench.

Right-back Kayne Ramsay will also be hoping to produce another standout performance after he starred against Birmingham.

The game between Charlton and Stockport is hugely important, with both sides having a chance of finding themselves in the top six at the end of the day, and it could just take one moment from any of the key players on the pitch to settle it.

The Addicks will know that Wootton has found himself in the right positions to have plenty of chances this season, as per the xG stats, so they should have a plan in place to try and nullify the forward.
