Charlton Athletic have confirmed that Thomas Kaminski will keep the number one shirt going into the 2026/27 season.

Nathan Jones has done a fine job since his appointment at The Valley, and he kept the Addicks in the Championship last season following promotion.

To do that on a modest budget in comparison to many rivals at this level is quite an achievement, and Charlton will now be looking to kick-on going into the new campaign.

However, some fans have become increasingly frustrated at the lack of action in the market so far this summer, even with the likes of Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara and Millenic Alli among the new recruits.

In terms of new additions, there will be different views on where the club must prioritise, but there is a feeling with a section of supporters that a new goalkeeper should be brought in.

Thomas Kaminski was the first-choice last season after joining the club from Luton Town, but it’s fair to say that he had an inconsistent first year at The Valley.

Yet, whilst this doesn’t guarantee that the former Blackburn man will be in goal for the season opener at home to Derby County, Charlton confirmed their squad numbers on social media, with Kaminski retaining the number one.

From the outside, it looks like a vote of confidence in the stopper from the club, and Jones will be hoping that the Belgian international responds with some big early performances.

When Charlton completed a deal for Kaminski, it looked like a shrewd, sensible signing by the club, as he had impressed at this level with Blackburn, and his performances saw him earn a move to Luton when they were in the Premier League.

And, whilst the Hatters were relegated, Kaminski did emerge with credit from that campaign, so even though his second year with Luton was tougher, it did seem a good move.

But, for whatever reason, he hasn’t managed to get back to near his best levels at Charlton, although he did make some big contributions at times last season.

Given his age and experience, the 33-year-old will know that he has more to offer, and the Addicks will be hoping that he can defy any doubters with a big start to the season.

As for Jones, he will have his own plans for the squad ahead of the deadline, and the reality is that if Kaminski doesn’t perform, then he will be replaced.
