Arsenal’s resolute performance saw them edge Chelsea to reach the Women’s Champions League semi-finals, despite Sjoeke Nusken’s late breakthrough in a frantic second leg at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues managed no shots on target in the first half as Arsenal’s well-drilled defence stood firm, with Stina Blackstenius’ header chalked off for offside in the 80th minute.

Nusken’s venomous strike in stoppage time gave Chelsea a very late lifeline, but their hopes for an elusive Champions League trophy had slipped away with the holders going through.

As it happened

Chelsea had a two-goal deficit to overturn and the onus was on them to emulate the comeback they pulled off at this stage of Europe’s premier competition last season against Manchester City.

As they did at the Emirates in last week’s first leg defeat, Chelsea applied the pressure in the opening stages and created the better openings.

Ellie Carpenter’s burst of speed down the right flank had Katie McCabe scampering back before she picked out an onrushing Nusken, who dragged her shot wide of the right post.

Caitlin Foord then drove inside from the right flank and fired straight into the gloves of Hannah Hampton.

The 31-year-old winger was isolated in promising situations a handful of times in the first half as Arsenal amassed 11 shots, but the Gunners were also content to rely on soaking up the pressure.

Lucy Bronze threaded it through to Erin Cuthbert, and the ball broke to Alyssa Thompson with a slice of good fortune.

The American instinctively pulled the trigger, but at the expense of accuracy as she was slightly rushed.

Lauren James showcased the latest instalment of her dribbling prowess, but the Arsenal defence continued to diligently protect their goal.

Sam Kerr and Thompson’s fluid interchange yielded another attempt for the latter, who couldn’t find the target again as her strike sailed over the bar.

Arsenal goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar was left untroubled in the first half as Chelsea’s more measured advances had been disrupted as less patient attacks crept in.

Renee Slegers was forced to take off Steph Catley through injury before the interval and entrusted Taylor Hinds to slot in and shuffled McCabe into centre-back.

Their assured setup needed to remain sturdy to keep Chelsea from scoring the all-important opener, while their early effort in the second half could have given them an even healthier lead in the tie.

McCabe swung a corner in for Arsenal, which was met by an unmarked Stina Blackstenius. She powered her header towards goal from close range as teammate Little couldn’t maneuver away and blocked the effort.

Nusken alertly spotted the space for Kerr to exploit and arrowed an inviting throughball for the Blues striker to latch onto.

Emily Fox and Lotte Wubben-Moy covered ground sharply to delay Kerr’s straight path to goal. The Australian still dug out a floating shot aimed towards the top right corner and van Domselaar was called into a flying stop.

The sides traded blows as substitute Beth Mead fiercely crossed to Blackstenius lurking in the area, but the Swede couldn’t replicate her headed precision from the first leg as she couldn’t set herself and saw the ball rise over.

James remained Chelsea’s most enterprising player when she zipped a low-driven cross into the box with Kerr waiting to pounce. Chelsea’s focal point strayed offside and placed her shot into the body of van Domselaar.

Blackstenius laid it off to January signing and compatriot Smilla Holmberg to cross back to her once she continued her run. She nodded down into the bottom left corner, only for a narrow offside review to deny Arsenal’s fourth of the tie.

Chelsea almost capitalised moments after this VAR intervention when James found Nusken, who awkwardly craned her neck to redirect the ball, but her header went wide.

She would have another chance, though, the other side of teenager Veerle Buurman’s agonising attempt hitting the post from a rebounded Lauren James strike.

Bronze’s pinpoint cross was met by the German midfielder with Chelsea destined to halve the deficit until van Domselaar’s heroic outstretched dive saw the effort tipped onto the right post and trickle along the goal line.

A last roll of the dice from Chelsea but still unable to breach the Gunners defence.

Arsenal withstood the late surge and almost inflicted the nail in the coffin, courtesy of Mead when she rattled the upright.

With two minutes remaining, Kerr glided down the left wing and passed inside to Nusken, who notched a deserved goal for herself. It ended up as a consolation.

Sonia Bompastor picked up a second yellow card and was dismissed beyond the allotted five minutes with tensions spilling over, as Arsenal prevailed.

The defending champions will face the winner of Lyon vs Wolfsburg in the semi-finals of the Women’s Champions League, while Chelsea’s hopes to be crowned European champions for the first time were snatched away by their London rivals.
