In a recent report, The Sun mentioned that Chelsea are in the mix to sign Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini. It has been claimed that the Blues would have to compete with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United in the race to land the Italian centre-back this off-season.

Scalvini’s Solid Campaign In Serie A

Scalvini enjoyed a decent campaign at the Italian club as he was responsible for putting in a handful of solid displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The Italian talent participated in 30 matches for Atalanta last season, scoring three times and earning one assist across all competitions.

The 22-year-old is currently among the best young centre-backs in Serie A. Hence, it is no surprise that the Blues are in the running to secure his services in this transfer period.

His current contract at Atalanta will expire in the summer of 2028, which could make it tough for Chelsea to land him on a cut-price deal later this year.

Should Chelsea Boss Xabi Alonso Snap Scalvini Up This Summer?

Scalvini is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to make some important interceptions for his side inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and is a tidy passer as well from the back.

Standing at 1.94m, the Italian centre-half is a strong presence in the air as well. Scalvini is primarily a centre-back but can also serve as a defensive midfielder if asked to do so by his manager. However, there are some concerns over whether he can adapt to the high intensity of the Premier League if the Blues manage to get a deal done for him this summer.

We can expect Scalvini to inject more bite and steel into Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso’s defensive department. He is good enough to compete for a regular starting place at the West London club in the coming seasons.

At 22, the future looks quite promising for Scalvini as long as he continues to improve with each season. Thus, the Blues would be wise to go all out to snap him up before the end of this summer transfer window.
