The talented youngster had attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Manchester United.

Chelsea has been focusing on signing young prospects from around the world under the guidance of BlueCo.

They are now targeting another promising talent from Sporting, with Essugo emerging as their next potential recruit.

Chelsea’s interest in Essugo

The 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder is currently on loan at Las Palmas. His performances have sparked interest from Chelsea.

The Blues have reportedly been tracking Essugo since January and look set to push for his signing as they plan for the future.

Essugo made history in March 2021 when he became Sporting’s youngest-ever debutant. At just 16 years and 16 days old, he featured against Vitoria de Guimaraes.

He set another record as Portugal’s youngest player to appear in the Champions League later that year. He played against Ajax, making headlines as a teenage sensation.

In February 2022, he surpassed Luis Figo as Sporting’s youngest starter at 16 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Chelsea are strengthening their midfield options

Chelsea’s relationship with Sporting is strong after their successful deal for Quenda.

The club is looking to add more young players to their squad, and Essugo fits the profile of their recent signings.

The Portuguese starlet can play as both a central and defensive midfielder. He could learn from Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez and gain valuable experience at Chelsea.

With Romeo Lavia struggling with injuries and requiring careful workload management, Essugo could be a shrewd addition to the squad.
