Whether Enzo Fernandez will stay or leave Chelsea this summer remains unclear, but Manchester City are not giving up just yet, and the Blues have offered their biggest hint yet that they want this resolved as soon as possible.

The 25-year-old is under contract with Chelsea until June 2032, and they are in no rush to sell Fernandez this summer.

Chelsea set a transfer deadline of 5pm (UK) last Friday, August 14, for suitors to bid £120 million if they wanted to match the asking price. No club advanced and met the required terms.

Man City have shown heavy interest this summer, with new head coach Enzo Maresca, formerly of Chelsea, wanting to reunite with Fernandez at the Etihad.

With Rodri now on his way to Barcelona, Man City are looking to bolster their midfield, and Fernandez is high on Maresca's list.

Despite missing Chelsea's initial deadline, City are still keen to explore a deal, but they will have to meet whatever new demands Chelsea put on the table.

Chelsea have made it clear to Fernandez and his agent, Javier Pastore, what terms they would accept. They are settled either way regarding how Fernandez's future plays out. Manager Xabi Alonso has also admitted he would like the Argentine in his squad for the 2026/27 season.

Fernandez was brought on for Chelsea in their 3-1 win over Real Sociedad in pre-season on Saturday. He received some boos when he came on at Stamford Bridge, but another portion of the crowd chanted his name to quieten those unpleased with the transfer saga.

After the deadline passed, Chelsea expected Fernandez to remain at the club for the rest of the season.

However, fresh reports out of Spain reveal Fernandez's future is far from settled ahead of the September 1 summer transfer deadline.

It's claimed the 'operation will resume in the coming days', and Chelsea have now brought in super-agent Jorge Mendes to help 'speed up the departure' of Fernandez.

Mendes was involved when Chelsea signed Fernandez from Benfica back in early 2023, which saw the Blues splash £106.8m.

Maresca has called on the City hierarchy to make more signings this summer to bolster their team. This came after their 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have also been linked with other midfielders this summer. A £64m bid was rejected earlier in the window for Bournemouth's Alex Scott.

AS in Spain claims that although Alonso would like to have Fernandez at the club, he is not against selling him if Chelsea sign reinforcements. Chelsea are expected to 'return strongly to the market' should Fernandez leave.

With the new season approaching, Chelsea need to minimise any potential distractions, and the reported introduction of Mendes suggests they want it resolved as soon as possible, whether that's a deal being agreed or City walking away and not meeting the Blues' demands.
