Chelsea are making significant progress towards signing Honest Ahanor from Atalanta in a deal worth around €40m.
Sky Sport Italia reports that direct talks between the London club and Atalanta have advanced, with personal terms being finalised. The deal could be completed by Friday.
The fee would deliver a major profit for the Bergamo side, who signed Ahanor from Genoa last summer for €16m plus €4m in add-ons. It is below the €60m-plus valuation previously linked to Atalanta, and only marginally above Brighton’s €34m bid that was rejected earlier in the window.
Any agreement would extend recent business between the clubs, after Chelsea brought in Marco Palestra from Atalanta earlier this summer.
Ahanor, an Italy international born in February 2008, made 28 Serie A appearances in his debut campaign at the Gewiss Stadium and featured in the Champions League.
