Chelsea moved quickly to ease concerns surrounding Liam Delap after the summer signing was forced off in obvious discomfort during the weekend draw. Initial fears suggested a lengthy spell out, but the club now believe the striker could be back within four weeks, offering a significant lift for Enzo Maresca as he navigates a demanding schedule.
Delap’s collision left him clutching his shoulder and heading straight down the tunnel, prompting immediate worries about a long absence. Maresca admitted after the match that the situation looked “quite bad”, although further assessment has provided a more hopeful outlook for Chelsea.
Speaking in Italy ahead of the Champions League defeat to Atalanta, the Chelsea manager clarified the situation, saying on Monday: “Liam has not fractured anything. I’m not sure [how long he will be out], to be honest.”The injury relates to the acromioclavicular joint in Delap’s right shoulder and crucially, it is not expected to require surgery. That detail alone has boosted spirits at Cobham, particularly given the importance of the 22-year-old to Chelsea’s attacking structure under Maresca.

Suggestions surfaced that Chelsea might accelerate plans for Emanuel Emegha, who has already agreed to join from Strasbourg next summer. The idea of bringing him in early as temporary cover appeared logical on paper, especially with Delap unavailable and the fixture list intensifying.
However, Chelsea dismissed that possibility completely. The club remain committed to allowing Strasbourg’s captain to complete his season in France, maintaining the long term plan rather than reacting to short term pressures. It reflects a more strategic approach under the current football operations team, prioritising continuity and development rather than opportunistic short term fixes.
Delap’s contribution this season has been steady, even if his only goal to date arrived in the 3-0 Champions League victory against ten man Barcelona at Stamford Bridge last month. His physical presence and off ball movement have been central to Maresca’s evolving system, one built on vertical connections, disciplined possession and fluid forward rotations.
A four week absence still disrupts Chelsea’s rhythm, particularly during a period where consistency remains elusive. Yet the prognosis could have been far worse and Maresca will believe that Delap can reintegrate swiftly once his shoulder recovers. With no structural damage and no surgery required, the pathway back appears clear, provided rehabilitation progresses as expected.
Chelsea’s season has swung between promise and frustration, but receiving positive news on Delap represents a timely stabiliser. For Maresca, who continues to shape the squad in his image, keeping key components available is vital if Chelsea are to build momentum into the new year.
