Chelsea could raise serious January transfer funds with £40m sales and loans

After bringing more players in in the summer, Chelsea are looking to use this January to trim their squad and rearrange some loans.

We can see them bringing a player in – but perhaps only if they get a lot of their outgoings completed early.

Simon Johnson’s DealSheet piece for the Athletic reels off a number of players the Blues would love to shift this month – most of them left over from the summer where we simply ran out of time before all the unwanted fringe players could be moved on.

Top of the list is Carney Chukwuemeka, who could raise the biggest fee. He’s got a £40m release clause, and while they won’t get that, it shows how highly they value him.

Close behind is Cesare Casadei, who has played more but is maybe considered to have a slightly lower ceiling. The Blues are in talks with Torino and several other Serie A clubs over a move.

The two of them together should raise £40m or more if Chelsea get what they want.

In both cases, the Blues want to make sure it’s a permanent deal and not a loan, even if that means lowering their demands a little.

Lesser deals could add up to a healthy saving on the wage bill

Then there are the lesser deals: we’ve already covered a potential loan out for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (we don’t think that would happen if the two above are sold). Ben Chilwell seems to have no buyers, Harvey Vale can go for free with a sell-on clause, Deivid Washington could be loaned too.

Add all of these guys together and we could see Chelsea free up quite a chunk of wage bill and pick up a decent load of transfer fees to work with. That doesn’t guarantee they’ll use it this month – but it opens up the possibility.
