Chelsea have another fitness issue to monitor, this time involving goalkeeper Mike Penders. The 21-year-old is set to miss Belgium’s Nations League meeting with Italy after picking up a quadriceps injury in training, a problem that has stalled what looked like a timely step forward in his international progress.
For Chelsea, it adds to an awkward international break. Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer have already withdrawn from Brazil and England duty respectively, and now Penders has joined the list of concerns. He has not formally pulled out in the same way, but the outcome is much the same for the short term, he will not feature on Friday and his immediate schedule is suddenly uncertain.
Reports indicate Penders has remained in Belgium to continue rehabilitation at the national training centre in Tubize. There is no firm timeline yet, which is what matters most. Quadriceps injuries can be minor and clear up within one to three weeks. They can also be far more serious. A severe tear or rupture would mean surgery and an absence measured in months, not days.
That leaves Belgium waiting over Monday’s game against France and leaves Chelsea doing the same ahead of a busy spell. Cup football looked like Penders’ clearest route to minutes this season. If this issue drags on, that route narrows quickly.

Penders arrived from Genk for £17million in the summer of 2025, then spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, where he did enough to strengthen his reputation and force his way into Belgium’s World Cup squad picture. He has already had two senior outings for Chelsea, first in the Carabao Cup second round win over Luton, then again in the third round victory over Leeds.
Xabi Alonso made clear what the club want from him. “We want that he enjoys [himself], that he has composure and maturity, that he gets used to playing in a new stadium with new team-mates,” Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said last month. He added, “So far, he is very mature for his age – it was great that he played very competitive football last year in Strasbourg. Now this is the next step, and we need to help him.”
With Emi Martinez signed as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, Penders’ opportunities were always likely to come in the domestic cups. The next obvious date in his diary is the Carabao Cup fourth round trip to Liverpool in late October. That remains possible, but only if this injury proves to be at the mild end of the scale. Right now, Chelsea are waiting, and waiting is rarely good news when muscles are involved.
