Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo has been ruled out for weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury, head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed.
The 28-year-old Chelsea centre-back was forced off during Saturday’s 2–0 Premier League victory over Brentford at Stamford Bridge after pulling up in the second half.
Initial assessments have now revealed damage that will sideline the centre-back for the short term, dealing Chelsea a defensive setback during a busy period of fixtures.
“Unfortunately for Tosin, there’s something in his hamstring that is going to rule him out for the next few weeks,” Rosenior said (via the Chelsea website).
“I can’t be more precise than that at the moment.”
Adarabioyo has featured regularly in recent weeks, and his absence reduces Rosenior’s options at the back as Chelsea juggle domestic and European commitments.
The timing is particularly awkward, as illness is also affecting several members of the squad.
However, there was some positive news from the training ground on Monday, with Estevao, Malo Gusto and Jamie Gittens all returning to training.
The trio missed the win over Brentford but are expected to be available for Wednesday’s Champions League fixture against Pafos.
Chelsea are still monitoring the fitness of Enzo Fernandez, who missed training due to illness. Rosenior admitted the midfielder remains a doubt ahead of the midweek clash.
“Enzo Fernandez was ill yesterday and missed training,” he said. “There were signs of it during the game. We’re working very hard to make sure the players are right.”
Axel Disasi is also back in contention after spending much of the season on the fringes of the first team.
This injury could offer the French defender an opportunity to re-establish himself in the squad.
Chelsea are also in the market for a centre-back. They are negotiating for Rennes star Jeremy Jacquet, who could push Adarabioyo out of Stamford Bridge.
