Chelsea forward’s transfer to Bundesliga brings Barcelona extra money | OneFootball

Former FC Barcelona academy product Marc Guiu was officially announced as a new signing for RB Leipzig earlier today. The Bundesliga club signed the Spanish striker from Chelsea in a deal worth €17 million.

Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona will also receive an additional payment because of the years Guiu spent developing at the club.

A small amount for Barcelona

Under FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, 5% of a transfer fee is distributed among the clubs involved in a player’s training between the ages of 12 and 23.

For players aged 12 to 15, clubs receive 5% of the solidarity pool for each season, while from 16 to 23 the allocation rises to 10% per season.

Guiu joined Barcelona at the age of seven and remained at La Masia until he was 18. As a result, the Catalan club is entitled to compensation for his final seven seasons in the academy.

With Leipzig paying €17 million, the Blaugrana are expected to receive €425,000 in training compensation from Guiu’s transfer.

That payment adds to other amounts Barcelona have collected this summer through the development rights of former players.

Transfers involving Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle United, Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Sergi Altimira to Sporting CP have generated a combined €3.4 million for Barça in training compensation.

Barcelona had already received €6 million when Guiu left for Chelsea in the summer of 2024. With the latest payment, the club’s total income linked to the striker reaches €6.42 million.

Guiu looking to revive his career

Guiu joined La Masia all the way back in 2013, as a seven-year-old and rose through the ranks at the club, making waves throughout his youth career.

The striker made his first-team debut for Barcelona in October 2023, in a La Liga clash against Athletic Club, under then-manager Xavi Hernandez.

It turned out to be a memorable evening for the Spaniard as he scored the only goal of the game, leading Barça to a 1-0 victory. Following that, he made six more senior appearances, adding another goal to his tally.

However, when Chelsea came calling in the summer of 2024, Guiu decided to move on, with the Blues paying his €6 million release clause.

But his career in England was a major letdown, as he played only 29 times in two seasons, managing eight goals. At 20, Guiu still has his entire career ahead of him, and the striker will hope to get things back on track at RB Leipzig.
