FC Barcelona have endured a torrid run of injuries since the start of the 2025–26 season. It almost feels as if the highs of the previous campaign have given way to the law of averages.
When it was confirmed that Pedri would miss at least a month of action, Hansi Flick’s selection problems grew even more severe. The midfielder from the Canary Islands remains a central figure in how this Barcelona side functions, and his absence is proving difficult to manage.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Flick now faces another potential setback as both Frenkie de Jong and Marc Casado must tread carefully in the upcoming Champions League clash against Club Brugge. The two midfielders are one yellow card away from suspension, meaning that any booking in Belgium would rule them out of the crucial game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge later this month.
With Pedri unavailable and Marc Bernal still being gradually reintroduced after a long knee injury, De Jong and Casado are currently the only fully fit pivot options in Flick’s squad. Bernal’s fitness has improved, but the German coach is wary of rushing him back too soon.
This delicate situation places additional pressure on both De Jong and Casado. If either is suspended for the Chelsea match, Barcelona would be left dangerously short of midfield options for what could prove to be a decisive fixture in the group stage.
Frenkie de Jong’s role becomes even more vital in Pedri’s absence. His ability to dictate tempo and control transitions makes him indispensable, and losing him against Chelsea would hand Enzo Maresca’s side a significant advantage.
As a result, Flick is expected to urge both players to avoid unnecessary risks against Brugge and to stay disciplined throughout the match. That, however, may be easier said than done for Casado, whose combative style naturally involves aggressive pressing and challenges.
Alternatively, Flick could decide to give Bernal a start in Belgium if he feels the young midfielder is ready, allowing either De Jong or Casado to rest and ensuring at least one of them remains available for the trip to London.
Barcelona’s visit to Bruges is not only about securing three points but also about managing their resources wisely. Flick must now find the right balance between maintaining momentum and safeguarding his already depleted midfield for the crucial weeks ahead.
