Chelsea have explored a move for Bologna centre-half John Lucumi, according to Quotidiano Sportivo.

The Blues are looking to shore up a defence that leaked goals last season and want to bring another centre-back to Stamford Bridge after completing a deal for Maxence Lacroix.

Chelsea are now eyeing Lucumi, who has caught the eye with his performances in Italy.

Last season, the reported Chelsea target won 58 percent of his aerial and 60% of his ground duels, earmarking himself as one of the better defenders in Serie A.

Levi Colwill is a world-class prospect but has struggled for consistency due to constant injury setbacks.

The West London outfit could use another equally reliable defender on the left side.

Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, and Mamadou Sarr have struggled to fill the void.

Two of those names are halfway out the door, and more are expected to follow suit. Perhaps that is why Chelsea are considering a move for the 28-year-old Lucumi.

However, they will face competition from Manchester United and Juventus. Both clubs are also showing interest in securing the ‘incredible‘ player’s services.

Chelsea already have Jorrel Hato and don’t need Lucumi

Chelsea will be tempted to add more defensive reinforcement, but it might pay them to stick with Jorrel Hato.

The Dutchman was one of the bright spots of last season, especially in the second half when there was not much to cheer.

He can develop into a world-class centre-half and also adds to the left-back options.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso needs to put faith in Hato to deputise for Colwill if he gets sidelined again this term. He can operate in a back three or four.

The 20-year-old is a terrific prospect blessed with speed and a cultured left foot. If he can work out his positioning, the sky is the limit for the former Ajax captain.

Chelsea do not need Lucumi at all.
