Chelsea have submitted a new and improved proposal to Rayo Vallecano for Spanish left-back Pep Chavarria, with talks between the two clubs progressing rapidly, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The London club are determined to finalise a deal for the 28-year-old defender, who has been identified by head coach Xabi Alonso as a defensive reinforcement ahead of the new campaign.

Following the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid earlier in the summer transfer window, Chelsea made filling the vacant left-back position a top priority.
