Chelsea’s season has lurched between frustration and flickers of promise, and as the race for Champions League qualification tightens, availability may matter as much as ability. A convincing 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale offered respite, yet the bigger picture remains shaped by injuries to influential figures like Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah.
With Manchester City and Manchester United next on the fixture list, Chelsea’s margin for error has all but vanished. The gap to the top four stands at six points, with seven matches left. It is a sprint, not a marathon, and squad fitness could decide everything.
There is a familiar theme surrounding Chelsea captain Reece James. Moments of optimism quickly interrupted by setbacks. His recent contract extension until 2032 should have been a statement of stability, instead it has been overshadowed by another hamstring issue.
James has not featured since the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on March 14, and caution remains the guiding principle. As Liam Rosenior put it, “He’s getting along really well, but not ready yet.”

Pressed further, he added, “I don’t know. We work day-to-day, so I don’t want to give a timeline and not come through with that timeline, put pressure on those players, but they’re all working really, really well at this moment.”
There is quiet hope he could return against Manchester City, though nothing is guaranteed. Chelsea have learned the hard way that rushing James rarely ends well.
If James represents uncertainty, Trevoh Chalobah brings a more reassuring tone. His ankle injury against Paris Saint-Germain initially looked severe, stretchered off in a moment that silenced Stamford Bridge.
The diagnosis, a high ankle sprain, was far less damaging than feared. Chalobah is progressing steadily, with Rosenior confirming, “Trev is progressing really well.”

A return in late April or early May now appears realistic. For Chelsea, that timing could be pivotal. Chalobah has been one of the more consistent defensive performers this season, and his presence would strengthen a back line that has lacked continuity.
Chelsea’s injury list does not end there. Jamie Gittens has suffered another hamstring problem, his third such setback. Rosenior admitted, “Unfortunately, Jamie, in training yesterday, picked up what looks like a hamstring injury again. We have to scan him and make sure.”
Elsewhere, Levi Colwill edges closer to a long awaited return after an ACL injury. “Levi, it’s really good to have him back in full training, but it’s going to take a few more weeks,” Rosenior explained.
Filip Jorgensen, meanwhile, remains sidelined after minor groin surgery. His absence has reshaped the goalkeeping hierarchy once again.
This is where Chelsea’s campaign will be decided, not only by tactics or individual brilliance, but by who is fit enough to take the pitch. Momentum can shift quickly, as seen in the emphatic cup victory, yet consistency demands reliable personnel.
Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah are central to that equation. One represents leadership and attacking thrust from deep, the other defensive assurance and composure.
If both return in time and remain available, Chelsea’s push for a top four finish gains credibility. If setbacks persist, the margins become even tighter.
In a season defined by fine lines, fitness could be the difference between Champions League football and another year of what might have been.
