Blues sweating over latest injury worry

Chelsea came through their Carabao Cup tie against Leeds United on Wednesday with a fresh injury concern.

The Blues won out 6-3 in a topsy-turvy affair at Stamford Bridge, but Xabi Alonso was not able to welcome back anyone major into his squad as he shuffled his pack.

Fringe players were handed opportunities to impress that they failed to take as the hosts fell 2-0 down, but they roared back when the stars were introduced to reach round four.

With that in mind, here is all the latest Chelsea injury news and potential return dates...

The injury concern from Wednesday.

The defender had been left out against Arsenal in a precautionary measure taken by Alonso, who admitted afterwards that the centre-back was not fully fit.

He had picked up an issue in training, with fears on the rise amongst Chelsea fans, who will have his year-long absence from his ACL tear fresh in their minds.

The England international was reintegrated into the side against Leeds, but concerns heightened once more when he was replaced by Wesley Fofana, and was seen heading straight down the tunnel instead of making his way to the bench.

Alonso assured that there was nothing majorly wrong with the 23-year-old, saying: “It is just from little things that he's having, but we don't expect that it's an injury.”

Caicedo has had a blighted start to the season having suffered a knock.

He missed the first two games of the campaign before making an appearance against former club Brighton, where he lasted just 14 minutes before coming off once more.

The Ecuador international did not play against either Arsenal or Leeds, with Alonso revealing that he was struggling with a calf problem.

“He has a problem in his calf,” the manager said of Caicedo.

“No [it is not a new injury]. It was the same one he had before Brighton. I wanted to have Moi [for that game].

“Probably it was my mistake to push him too early, so that’s why I’m cautious now not to make the same mistake.”

Potential return date: September 12 vs Hull City (H)

Summer signing Palestra was a regular throughout pre-season, but has not been featured in any of their matches so far this season.

The Italian suffered a knock in training that has stopped him from making his competitive debut for his new side since his arrival from Atalanta.

Speaking to Italian outlet Tuttomercato a fortnight ago, Palestra revealed he was closing on a return to the pitch: "I’m fine, it’s still a few days away, but I feel much better."

Jordan Henderson

Henderson has not yet played for his new club since joining on a free transfer from Brentford.

The veteran broke his wrist celebrating England’s quarter-final victory over Mexico at the World Cup, and as such, he has not been able to train with his new team-mates.

He has since been pictured back in first-team training ahead of Chelsea’s defeat at Arsenal, with Alonso confirming that the former Liverpool captain was close to a comeback.

“He has been very close to the team,” the Spaniard said.

“Even being injured, he has been travelling with us [to games]. I know that he likes and he needs to have this connection with the team, to have this impact on the pitch and off the pitch.

“He has been training very well, but still it is frustrating for him that, even being the arm, it is taking that long. I think he is in the last stage of his recovery.”
