Chelsea have reportedly approached AC Milan over the possibility of signing goalkeeper Mike Maignan in the summer transfer window.
The France international, considered one of the best in the world in his position, has been a key player for the Rossoneri since moving to the San Siro from Lille four years ago.
However, his contract expires in 2026 and it appears progress on a new deal may have stalled, which could force the Italian giants into a sale this summer.
Despite reports this week that the Blues are not looking to acquire a new shot stopper, Fabrizio Romano claims that the Premier League club are looking to sign Maignan.
The 29-year-old has “always been high” on Chelsea‘s list of potential goalkeeper targets and are “aware” of his current contract situation. Whether he stays or goes this year is “up to Milan”.
Goalkeeper has been a problem position across multiple seasons for Chelsea, with Robert Sanchez unconvincing between the sticks.
Kepa Arrizabalaga and Djordje Petrovic are set to return from their season-long loan spells at Bournemouth and Strasbourg respectively, but it seems like neither man will don the gloves at Stamford Bridge if they pull off this signing.
Maignan is coming off the back of a difficult season, but would be a clear upgrade on their current options and significantly boost Enzo Maresca’s squad ahead of next season.
Chelsea have been busy in the transfer market ahead of the Fifa Club World Cup. On Monday they confirmed the signing of Dario Essugo from Sporting Club for £18.5m with no add-ons.
The west London outfit also decided to not use the obligation to buy Jadon Sancho following the end of his loan move from Manchester United, potentially favouring a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens.
Meanwhile, Estevao Willian will join Chelsea after the Club World Cup. Palmeiras agreed to sell the 18-year-old last summer in a deal worth up to £51 million.
