Blues suffered damaging defeat as title race heats up
Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League football were dealt a major blow as they were thrashed 3-0 by Manchester City.
The Blues were the better team in the first half at Stamford Bridge but conceded twice in the space of six minutes to Nico O’Reilly and Marc Guehi shortly after half-time.
A goal from Jeremy Doku made it even more one-sided and left Liam Rosenior and his players with plenty of questions to answer.
Dom Smith was at Stamford Bridge to rate the Chelsea players’ performances…
Robert Sanchez 4
Perhaps could have done better with the City goals, as both were within reach. But that may be being harsh. Gathered some crosses well.
Malo Gusto 4
Quite a defensive display by the right-back, who barely got forward.
Jorrel Hato 4
Needed to get tighter to City players. A couple of decent passes.
Wesley Fofana 4
Coped well aerially despite his lack of height for a centre-back. Appeared to pick up a little niggle in the second half so Chelsea fans will hope he is OK.
Marc Cucurella 5
Showed some attacking invention down the left as well as some decent defending. Almost scored in both halves.
Moises Caicedo 5
Was having a good game in midfield even at 2-0 down but then gave the ball away in an awful area as Doku nabbed it off him and took full advantage to put the game out of sight.
Andrey Santos 5
A big chance of impress as he played ahead of Enzo Fernandez due to the Argentine’s club-imposed ban. Got about the pitch well enough, some important tackles, but pinched of the ball on occasion.
Estevao 4
Did very little on the left wing and picked up another silly booking for kicking the ball away. Was subbed off in the second half.
Cole Palmer 5
Carried Chelsea’s offensive threat all afternoon, coming closest from a late free-kick. Against his former team, it just didn’t happen for him.
Constantly ran back towards goal and didn’t take risks. One nice turn but little impact beyond that.
Joao Pedro 5
Good in the air and raced free on one occasion before the goalkeeper beat him to a 50-50.
Subs:
Alejandro Garnacho (Santos, 67’) 4
Came on with Chelsea 2-0 down and soon enough it was three. Didn’t get a chance to get the afterburners on.
Romeo Lavia (Estevao, 67’) 4
Came on to add some physicality as well as some composure in midfield but that was always a tough ask with the game only heading one way.
Liam Delap (Joao Pedro, 81’) N/A
Dario Essugo (Caicedo, 81’) N/A
Josh Acheampong (Gusto, 88’) N/A
Not used: Sharman-Lowe, Tosin, Sarr, Guiu
