Chelsea have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior days before Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley, naming under-21s boss Calum McFarlane as interim for the rest of the season.
The club said in a statement that they had parted company with Rosenior, thanked him and his staff, and confirmed McFarlane will lead the team with support from existing backroom staff. They added the decision was not taken lightly and that recent results and performances had fallen below required standards.
Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton followed four straight league losses in which Chelsea failed to score. The Amex setback made it five league defeats in a row without a goal, their first such run since 1912.
Rosenior was appointed midway through the season and was praised in the statement for his integrity and professionalism.
Chelsea are striving for European qualification and to progress in the FA Cup. The club will undertake self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.
