When Chelsea signed Jamie Gittens this summer, they were hoping he’d adapt immediately to life at Stamford Bridge.
Gittens is beginning to find his groove after a slow start, which bodes well for the Blues with club football returning next weekend.
The Chelsea star delivered a sensational performance as England Under-21s defeated Andorra yesterday in qualification for the next European Championship.
Gittens provided the assist for his Chelsea teammate Tyrique George to score the winner.
His wing play was outstanding, earning him plaudits as ‘England’s player of the night‘. Manager Lee Carsley also praised the ‘exciting’ talent.
Gittens created three big chances, played five key passes and was accurate with three of his six attempted crosses. He also completed 5/8 dribbles and won 7/13 ground duels.
Chelsea will be buoyed by the fact that he is gradually finding his feet. His performance in the win against Liverpool before the break was encouraging, and he has built on it.
Chelsea need Gittens firing on the left wing, with Pedro Neto struggling there in recent weeks.
The 21-year-old will hope to bag his first goal for Chelsea this weekend when they visit Nottingham Forest.
This run of games should do wonders for Gittens’ confidence.
After a slow start to life at Chelsea, he’s now showing the sharpness, drive and end product that persuaded them to move for him in the first place.
His impact for England’s Under-21s has been a timely reminder of his potential, and he’ll return to Cobham full of belief.
With momentum now on his side, Gittens has the perfect platform to stake his claim for a starting berth.
Chelsea’s left wing could soon have a new, dynamic presence capable of changing games if he maintains this form.
