Chelsea have reportedly put young defender Mamadou Sarr on the transfer market, according to transfer news specialist Sacha Tavolieri.
The Blues signed him last year and brought him to Stamford Bridge in January, but he has not lived up to expectations.
Chelsea were dealing with defensive issues, and former boss Enzo Maresca called for centre-backs, but the sporting hierarchy did not listen.
They had signed Sarr from French side Strasbourg for £12 million in June on an eight-year deal, leaving him on loan, and didn’t want to spend any more in that position.
Unfortunately, since joining in January, the Chelsea ace has not moved the needle. He is weak in the air and has failed to grasp the pace of the Premier League.
His reading of the game is his standout ability, but it did not show in West London, and the FIFA Club World Cup champions have now put him on the market.
There are talks of interest from Real Sociedad or a Premier League loan, but it appears Chelsea now want to sell permanently. Al-Hilal are showing interest.
New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso seems set to head into the season with Levi Colwill, Maxence Lacroix, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato, and Josh Acheampong as his centre-backs.
Following Trevoh Chalobah’s departure, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi are headed out on loan. Aaron Anselmino will likely join them.
Meanwhile, Tosin Adarabioyo is attracting transfer interest from the Premier League and La Liga.
For Chelsea, the final few weeks of the transfer window should focus on streamlining the squad rather than making new signings.
Players like Sarr, who desperately need new environments to shine, should be moved, as the Blues are not in any European competition.
Chelsea also need to do everything within their power to hold on to midfielder Enzo Fernandez, as he cannot be replaced in these final days of the window.
If they get it right, perhaps Chelsea can finally compete for top honours again.
