Chelsea claimed a memorable 2-1 win over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues getting their Premier League campaign back on track after back-to-back losses.
Chelsea were depleted with as many as seven players missing the game due to suspensions and injuries.
However, the Blues put in a solid performance to clinch three deserved points.
Several Chelsea players deserved praise for their showings, but three stars stood out to Premier League legend Alan Shearer, who put them in his Team of the Week.
First on the list was Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, who got his chance in the team following injuries to Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Wesley Fofana.
It was a massive occasion for the 19-year-old, but he stepped in and put in an assured performance.
Acheampong is earning praise for his duels with a seasoned pro like Alexander Isak and his ability to drive forward with the ball.
Shearer said, “Stunted Liverpool’s attack and performed maturely in a defence that was missing some key players. Just unfortunate that he picked up an injury.”
Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella was also lauded for shutting down the dangerous Mohamed Salah.
The Spanish defender won five out of six duels, won three fouls, created one big chance, completed five clearances, and executed three out of five long balls.
He also made two tackles, as well as two interceptions.
Shearer said, “Kept Mohamed Salah quiet and showed his attacking threat once again with a brilliant cross for Estevao Willian’s winner.”
Of course, there was praise for the Man of the Match, Moises Caicedo, after another stellar showing in the engine room.
The Ecuadorian midfielder shut down Liverpool attacks with aplomb and capped off his brilliant showing with a stunning goal.
Shearer added, “Is there anything he can’t do? Gave Chelsea the lead against Liverpool with an incredible goal and totally dominated the midfield.”
Chelsea will likely use this performance as a springboard after a mixed start to the season. This victory will give them confidence to keep delivering the goods.
