The Blues look to reverse their fortunes after a challenging spell
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea got off the mark in the Champions League as they beat Jose Mourinho’s Benfica 1-0. Richard Rios hit an awkward own goal in the first half after turning Alejandro Garnacho’s cross home in the first half, badly miss-hitting his clearance in doing so.
It was a composed if imperfect performance from Chelsea after a difficult run saw them win just one in five, and Maresca will be thrilled to get back to winning ways. He will not be pleased, however, to have seen the substitute Joao Pedro sent off deep in injury time after being shown a second yellow card for a high boot. He will now be suspended for the Blues’ upcoming European outings, further complicating the Italian’s selection as he faces various first-team injuries.
Estevao tried out a new role in the second half, slotting in at striker in place of Tyrique George, who struggled after starting. Garnacho made his mark from the off, too, with Jamie Gittens struggling after coming on in his stead.
