Estevao’s absence from the open training session today means he won’t play against PSG, and is unlikely to feature against Newcastle.

The open training on the day before a Champions League game always creates a few interesting headlines based on who is there and who is not there, and that’s what what has happened with Chelsea today.

Their open session was conspicuous by the absence of Estevao Willian. The winger has been out for a while with a hamstring injury, although he seemed to be so close to a return we did think he’d be training, even if he wasn’t ready to play a part tomorrow.

Rosenior keeping cautious over Estevao

Manager Liam Rosenior had said the following on Friday, when asked about the Brazilian’s fitness ahead of the Wrexham game in the FA Cup:

“We need to be really, really careful, given it was a hamstring injury. He just needs to clear a few more markers before we put him back in.”

Presumably then, those “markers” still haven’t been cleared. That now puts the Saturday night game against Newcastle in doubt too. Even a sub appearance in that game starts to look unlikely if he’s not in training on a Tuesday, after a good few weeks out.

Still, with Jamie Gittens one of those to feature in the session today, depth is coming back.

In other news…

The biggest news from the session was of course the appearance of Levi Colwill – but fans shouldn’t get too excited about an imminent return to first team action.

The game against PSG reminded us of one more than ten years ago, where we took control at the Parc des Princes.
