The first international break of the season is always an interesting moment to reflect on the summer that has just gone by.

With the summer’s transfer moves confirmed, it often ends up with speculation about moves which didn’t happen, and that’s just what’s going on at Liverpool site Empire of the Kop.

They had a historic window, spending crazy amounts on refreshing almost the whole first XI. But they still ended up talking about a player they didn’t end up signing – Joao Pedro. The Brazil striker ended up at Chelsea, but it could all have been so different.

“Earlier on in the window, Joao Pedro was on the list, or was offered to Liverpool at some point earlier on in the year,” they quote journalist Lewis Steele as saying.

“Paul Barber, who is the Brighton CEO, was going around telling other parties that Liverpool were interested. That was maybe Liverpool being used to drive up the market for Pedro, before he went to Chelsea.”

That’s all well and good – but let’s face it, we still got JP for a great price. And the instant success he’s had with the team, contributing to wins and scoring goals since the day he arrived for the Club World Cup knockout stages already makes him look like a bargain.

You won’t find many Blues fans griping that we paid too much for him, that’s for sure.

Liverpool have done some mega spending of their own, and while Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak are great players, they will do well to match the impact that Joao Pedro has had in his first 10 games at a new club.
