He impressed on loan at Stoke in the Championship this season, following spells at Blackpool, Wigan and Coventry.

Former Chelsea academy coach Michael Beale is Rangers manager and the Scottish giants have beaten a host of clubs in England to his signing.

Rangers offered Sterling a chance to play in the Champions League next season and compete with Celtic for major honours in Scotland.

He is expected to sign a deal in the coming weeks, subject to a medical and final contractual details being rubber-stamped.

Sterling previously impressed at Chelsea in pre-season under Thomas Tuchel in 2021, raising hopes he could make it at Stamford Bridge.

But the Blues have since signed right-back Malo Gusto from Lyon and he is set to join the first-team squad next season.

Sterling will leave having made one senior appearance for Chelsea, aged 17 in a League Cup match against Nottingham Forest in 2017.
