Man City’s ongoing scandal with regards to the Premier League’s accusation of cheating and lying on a vast scale has led to some comparisons with Chelsea.

Last year, the Blues accepted a fine and other suspended punishments from the league because of historic rule breaks under their previous ownership. It was felt that they got off lightly, and people (mainly bitter Spurs fans) have said they don’t want to see the same thing happen with City.

But not only are City’s misdeeds on a whole different scale to Chelsea’s their attitude to the investigation was the opposite. Kieran Gill’s piece for the Daily Mail today explains how the Blues presented their case in a way which worked massively in their favour.

Chelsea’s exceptional conduct gets them slap on the wrist

“Chelsea’s co-operation was described as ‘exceptional’. They self-reported. They co-operated,” Gill wrote.

“They provided approximately 200,000 documents to the Premier League, and arranged interviews with former club employees who no longer fell within the investigation’s jurisdiction. They would not have breached the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) had these payments totalling £47.5m been booked. They proved how none of the perpetrators were still working for Chelsea.”

That summarises what Chelsea did, and it couldn’t contrast more with Man City’s attitude. Their crimes were far worse, and more importantly their attitude was to stymie the investigation in every way possible.
