Manchester United are keen to find the right balance between deciding when to move an academy player on and when to keep him onboard, without stagnating his overall development.

In the past, the Red Devils have been guilty of keeping academy stars beyond their expiry date, which has resulted in them either leaving on a free transfer or eventually moving on when their value had already dropped significantly.

Radek Vitek’s possible sale is a step in the right direction. There are a few promising stars who could come in and do a job for Michael Carrick, but the emphasis must be on their individual growth at this stage of their careers.

This is why the reliable Sully has explained that Harry Amass could leave on loan, even though there is a glaring gap in the squad.

The 20-time English league champions are looking at bringing in an eventual successor to Luke Shaw, but the club could opt to bring in a left winger instead if the likes of Amass or Diego Leon impress during pre-season. A final decision will be made after United’s pre-season tour.

Another area where the Old Trafford side are looking to strengthen is up front with Benjamin Sesko requiring backup now that United are set to play many more games due to their Champions League qualification.

The plan was to bring in someone experienced, but academy sensation Chido Obi could do the job, as he has shown for both the Under-18s and Under-21s last term. Scoring 20 goals and registering six assists is proof that he is ready for first-team action.

Both Harry Amass and Chido Obi will get a chance to catch Michael Carrick’s eye during pre-season. There is also a chance that the talented Englishman and the young Dane could both leave on loan, considering the amount of interest they are generating from clubs in the EFL ladder.

There is also a chance Chido Obi, Harry Amass leave on loan

“Chido Obi and Harry Amass have a lot of interest from clubs in the lower divisions of English football, and both are likely to be in the summer tour squad too.

“Amass is rated very highly internally, and United would ideally like to loan him this summer, but anything can happen in pre-season, so let’s wait and see.”

A lot will depend on United’s summer business as well. If INEOS can sign a left-back and a striker, both will definitely be leaving temporarily.

However, if no additions occur, and both impress during pre-season, a first-team spot beckons.
