Matchday two of Group A at the Copa America sees reigning champions Argentina return to the field as they take on Chile at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

La Albiceleste cruised to a 2-0 opening game victory over Canada in Atlanta and another victory would confirm their place in the knockout stages of the tournament.

La Roja, meanwhile, had a tougher task in their group opener as they were held to a goalless draw by Peru; a match that they arguably should have won given their superior expected goals of 1.21.

Champions are out to make a statement

Argentina’s 2021 Copa America success ended 28 years of hurt waiting for continental glory and they followed up this victory by winning the World Cup in 2022 – edging to a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over France after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

That success could have seen La Albiceleste take their foot of the gas, however an astonishing run of 14 wins from their 15 matches since – the one blemish being a 2-0 defeat to Uruguay in World Cup qualifying – has shown that they are still very much the favourites for glory in the United States.

Of those 14 victories, Lionel Scaloni’s men have kept clean sheets in 12, which highlights the togetherness of the squad – with the most notable victory coming in the form of a 1-0 win over their bitter rivals Brazil in Rio de Janeiro as they inflicted their first-ever home World Cup qualifier defeat.

Argentina lead the outright markets ahead of Brazil and Uruguay and, with the strength of their squad, it is easy to see why.

Lionel Messi is still going strong at 37, the likes of Nicolas Otamendi and Angel Di Maria are also still involved with over 200 international caps between them, while Emiliano Martinez has been almost unbeatable between the sticks.

Messi and co are a force to be reckoned with and they will be expected to pass through their group with flying colours, with another Copa America triumph looking increasingly likely.

Chile vs Argentina team news

Chile boss Ricardo Gareca could be without Diego Valdes for their meeting with the reigning champions after he hobbled off at half-time in their draw with Peru.

After failing to find the net last time out, Eduardo Vargas could also be at risk of dropping out of the starting XI, with Ben Brereton Diaz lurking in the wings as a replacement option.

Argentina coach Scaloni does not have any injury issues to contend with heading into this encounter, although he may still feel the need for fresh faces.

Both Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez got on the scoresheet against Canada and will be battling to start up top alongside Argentina stalwarts Di Maria and Messi.

Nicolas Tagliafico could be promoted to the starting XI ahead of Marcos Acuna.
