Lewis Koumas has struggled for game time since his loan switch to Birmingham City

Lewis Koumas has fallen down the pecking order at Birmingham City since his loan switch from Liverpool this summer, and many Blues fans are all beginning to say the same thing about his situation.

Having enjoyed a prosperous loan spell with Stoke City in the EFL Championship last season, Welsh international Koumas returned to parent club Liverpool over the summer ahead of preparing for another move to the second tier.

It would be newly-promoted but highly ambitious Birmingham City who would win the race for the winger's signature, joining a side that had very recently broken the EFL points record.

However, 18 games into the new season, Koumas has failed to make much of an impression at St Andrews, appearing 14 times in the league with just four of those being starts, without either scoring or assisting.

When asked about the 20-year-old's loan spell thus far, head coach Chris Davies said: "Lewis Koumas has not played as much as he would want to, he’s someone I have spoken to about his own status and to be fair to Lewis, he did show some really positive signs, but he’s just found himself down the pecking order slightly.

"With these eight games in such quick succession, with every conversation that I’ve had with players that are maybe feeling a little bit more peripheral, I’ve said let’s just focus on the here and now because this is a big month for us, there’s a lot of games.

"I see these players here for the season, no doubt about it, but we will cross that bridge when we get to January.

"I know that Lewis is going to start games in this eight-game period. He’s going to play a lot of minutes, I’m sure."

With Davies stating that Koumas will have a role to play in the next block of games, Birmingham fans have had their own reaction and shared their own opinions on his situation.

Koumas is set to play a role in Birmingham's side over the next month, but with the January window approaching, there remains the very real possibility that the Welshman could be recalled next month if Liverpool believes he isn't progressing enough, with Blues fans sharing their opinion over the matter on social media.

This Birmingham fan believes that Koumas is not at the required level yet to be regularly playing for a side challenging for the top-six, with a recall a very real possibility this January.

Demarai Gray and Patrick Roberts were both signed this summer, and the duo have emerged as Davies' preferred options on either flank, leaving Koumas only a place on the bench, having failed to displace either of them.

At the start of the season, the ambition for Birmingham was always for a top-six finish, something which few newly-promoted sides rarely achieve. But with the investment in the squad and the rate at which they are going, a play-off finish was alway on the cards, and with their recent upturn in form, it looks like a very real possibility.

Koumas has failed to make the desired impact at St Andrews since his switch, with calls for him to be sent back in January and find someone of a higher calibre to play second fiddle to Roberts.

Fellow loanee Eiran Cashin has failed to integrate himself into the Blues starting 11 since his season-long loan switch from Brighton and Hove Albion this summer, and along with Koumas, could well return to their parent clubs this January.

Indeed, whilst Koumas has had minimal chances to make an impact in a Birmingham shirt, when he has been on the pitch, the Welshman has left a lot to be desired.

The son of former Cardiff City and West Brom attacking-midfielder Jason Koumas, the 20-year-old spent last season on loan with Stoke City, playing under three different head coaches in Steven Schumacher, Narcis Pelach, and Mark Robins.

Despite the regular switches in the dugout, Koumas made 43 appearances for the Potters in the Championship, helping the club narrowly avoid the drop tp League One.

Already a full Welsh international, making nine appearances for his nation already, Koumas posseses undoubted talent, yet with the talent ahead of him in the pecking order at Birmingham, his best option may well be to be recalled this January if he is unable to make an impact in the next block of games.
