A new report from journalist Pete O’Rourke has indicated that Liverpool are closely monitoring Harvey Elliott’s situation during his loan spell at Aston Villa. The 22-year-old midfielder arrived at Villa Park on the final day of the summer transfer window with the expectation of consistent playing time. However, the reality has been quite different in the first half of the 2025/26 season.

Liverpool are furious with Harvey Elliott’s game time at Aston Villa

According to the report, the Reds are “furious” about Elliott’s limited involvement with Aston Villa. In fact, there is already talk of a possible return in January, especially since several Bundesliga and Serie A clubs are reportedly interested in signing him if he becomes available in the winter transfer window.

The last two years have not been easy for Harvey Elliott. Although he showed great talent and potential after arriving at Liverpool in 2019, his development stalled when Arne Slot took over as manager. To regain playing time, he went on loan to Aston Villa, but the plan is not proving successful.

So far, Elliott has only played 167 minutes across five matches, a very low figure for a player still developing. Unai Emery hasn’t given him consistent playing time, not even as a substitute, and some reports suggest that a conditional buy clause may have contributed to this lack of opportunities.

When Elliott signed with Aston Villa, it seemed like a logical combination: a competitive team, a manager who values technical qualities, and a player eager to grow. However, the scenario hasn’t panned out that way, and his role at the club remains in doubt.

What should the Birmingham club do?

With Liverpool concerned about his progress and clubs in Germany and Italy interested, a recall in January seems very likely. His loan is clearly not working.

Aston Villa should terminate the loan and return Harvey Elliott to Liverpool in January. He doesn’t fit into Unai Emery’s plans, and remaining on the bench will only further hinder his development.

Removing the potential buy clause would also be beneficial for the club. Elliott needs real playing time and a project that trusts him, something Villa cannot offer him today.
