Blues haven't exactly made an ideal start to the season

Birmingham City's start to the 2026/27 season has been far from ideal, particularly after a slow-moving summer transfer window at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

In recent times, Blues have become one of the main stories in the Championship, largely due to the strong noise which has come from American investment group, Knighthead Capital Management.

Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Co. had been able to renew optimism levels in this part of the Second City after a previously bleak recent past, and whilst the goal is for the club to return to the Premier League for the first time since May 2011, recent months would suggest that they have perhaps hit their first major lull since being relegated to League One two summers ago.

As a result, Chris Davies' tenure has been extremely mixed so far, with the 41-year-old earning plenty of praise for the way in which his team blew the third tier out of the water, on and off the pitch, on their way to racking up a points total of 111 points.

But, fast-forward to the present, and Friday night's game against Wrexham in North Wales is already being viewed as a must-win by many supporters, with the Birmingham manager starting to feel the heat once again.

2025/26 was a mixed season for Birmingham all told, as many pre-season predictions had the club down as play-off contenders, but Davies' side were very rarely, if at all, in such conversations on the pitch.

With the club's top-six dream over by March, Blues still enjoyed a strong final month of the season with five matches unbeaten, whilst a finish of 10th was still their highest in a decade.

However, with the play-offs being expanded from four to six teams, there was hope that the Midlands outfit would be able to signal their intentions early in this season, but this is yet to happen.

Two draws against Sheffield United and Bristol City - one goalless and one needing a 95th-minute Demarai Gray to salvage a point - had seen early optimism somewhat diminish, coupled with only a handful of additions, before alarm bells were raised over the overall quality of Davies' squad and, from some, his managerial credentials after the 6-1 humiliation from Brentford in Tuesday's EFL Cup tie.

In previous transfer windows, we have been accustomed to seeing Birmingham sign a raft of new players, which included 14 upon their return to the Championship last season.

By no means was a similar number of additions required in this window, but it has become evident in the past three matches that further depth and quality is needed, particularly in attacking areas.

Whilst Demarai Gray has been utilised as a substitute after an injury-hit pre-season, Jay Stansfield has started games as a left-winger, which has, in many ways, limited his productivity, meaning Blues must act fast to address such an issue, and they are now linked with Herba Guirassy of FC Nantes.

Furthermore, Paik Seung-ho has become the latest player to fill a gap in the 'number 10' role, where Birmingham have now set their sights on the duo of Anis Mehmeti and Adrian Segecic, with the latter impressing for Portsmouth in the past 12 months.

In truth, sack calls from some sections of the Birmingham fanbase towards Davies aren't a new situation at this point, with the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant receiving plenty at various points of last season.

As recently as April, it was reported that Davies was at risk of losing his maiden managerial role and being replaced by former midfielder, Lee Carsley, as well as Thomas Frank, but such developments didn't come to fruition.

And, whilst majority owner, Wagner, continues to recover from a stroke suffered in February, the American previously reiterated his trust in Davies to eventually lead Blues to success, ironically ahead of their last trip to Wrexham.

"We are focused on process and I am confident the process he is pursuing will pay dividends and we will be competitors. The vast majority of people understand that," Wagner claimed last October.

With Friday's clash being viewed as a must-win end to August for Birmingham, their frustrated supporters may be somewhat comforted by the fact their record against Phil Parkinson's outfit in the past two seasons is fairly strong.

Blues have emerged victorious in both matches at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park by 3-1 and 2-0 scorelines, and whilst they are yet to win in North Wales under Davies, they have held Wrexham to successive 1-1 draws.

The latter of those was, of course, 10 months ago, when Patrick Roberts opened his account for the club with an equaliser in response to George Dobson's early opener in an intense contest.

However, three draws from the first three games would only increase the pressure on Davies, even though Wrexham have made an identical start to the season themselves.
