Jenson Seelt is closing in on a loan move to Championship side Swansea City. Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland have sanctioned the defender's departure as he looks for consistent playing time.
The centre-back featured throughout pre-season but was left out on the opening day of the Premier League season at Ipswich Town. It is thought he has agreed a contract extension, protecting the Black Cats' position before the switch.
Interest from Swansea surfaced earlier on Thursday. There had been fresh interest from the continent after last season's loan at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
All parties have decided that regular Championship football is the right step after a couple of injury-hit seasons.
The loan is understood to include no option to buy, and Seelt is expected to feature regularly after centre-back Cameron Burgess suffered a major achilles injury. An announcement could arrive later on Thursday.
