Chris Sutton has urged Leicester’s hierarchy to back new manager Russell Martin after he was confirmed at the King Power.

His post appeared to be a dig at Rangers, whose recruitment was split 12 months ago. LeicestershireLive reports that Martin had input on signings at Ibrox, though then sporting director Kevin Thelwell had the final say.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, he said: "Good luck to Russell Martin at Leicester. Let's hope he gets the backing he deserves this time around...."

Martin has signed a three-year deal, eight months after being sacked by Rangers. He lasted 17 games, with the club eighth in the Scottish Premiership and out of the Champions League.

Before Scotland, he won promotion to the Premier League with Southampton, then was dismissed less than halfway into the season. Parts of the fanbase have questioned his appointment.

Martin’s preference has been to sign British players or those with UK experience. He brought in Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell, Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough United, Thelo Aasgaard from Luton Town and Mikey Moore on loan from Spurs.

He also added Finland international Oliver Antman, Bojan Miovski from Girona and Canada defender Derek Cornelius. At Southampton he worked with Jason Wilcox before his move to Manchester United.
