Jon Rudkin has spoken about Russell Martin’s appointment, saying the new Leicester City manager is well placed to help revive the club after two successive relegations.

The club said in a statement that the former Southampton and Rangers manager signed a three-year contract on Monday night to replace Gary Rowett.

Martin’s first task will be to return the club to the Championship at the first attempt. Rudkin, who rarely speaks publicly, said the decision followed a thorough process and matched qualities the club values.

He described Martin as a strong leader, a clear decision-maker and someone with a defined way of working. He said Martin understands the responsibility of leading the team and can move the club forward with purpose and direction.

New sporting director James McCarron said Martin will be supported by a football structure built on alignment, accountability and high standards, creating the right environment for players and staff.

He outlined plans to strengthen culture across the football operation and to keep recruitment, development and performance aligned and consistent. Rudkin also thanked Rowett and assistant Callum Davidson for their work after rejoining earlier this year, and wished them well.
