According to journalist Andy Giddings, the Blades’ boss has confirmed that the 25-year-old will be out of action for the next couple of months through injury.

The Yorkshire outfit still have their sights set on competing for a play-off place in the Championship this season, but this latest development will come as a setback for the club.

Sheffield United earned a third place finish in the second division last season, but have endured a campaign of inconsistent results since losing in the play-off final to Sunderland last May.

McCallum has been an important part of the side this term, with the versatile player featuring in 20 of their first 30 games of the season.

McCallum has suffered an ankle injury that is set to keep him out of action for the next 10 weeks.

Wilder has confirmed the extent of the midfielder’s injury after he was substituted late in the first half of the Blades’ 1-1 draw with Millwall last weekend.

Meanwhile, forward Patrick Bamford is also set to miss the team’s upcoming clash with second place Middlesbrough.

The striker has become an important part of the side since arriving as a free agent in November, but he is set to be absent for Boro’s trip to Bramall Lane.

Bamford has also suffered from an ankle issue, and it has been confirmed by Wilder that the swelling remains an issue, likely keeping him out of the side for their next league game.

Sheffield United are 15th in the Championship, and will be hoping to close the eight point gap to sixth place Wrexham with a win over the Teesside outfit.

Kim Hellberg’s side will travel to face the Blades on 9 February in an 8.01pm kick-off.

Sam McCallum injury is a blow for Sheffield United

McCallum isn’t the most important player to Sheffield United, but his versatility has proved a real asset to the team.

He is capable of playing in midfield, but he has also deputised at left-back, and that has become quite useful for Wilder.

Missing Bamford is another blow, but he doesn’t look likely to be out for quite as long as McCallum will be.

But the fact that the 32-year-old will potentially miss such a big game against Middlesbrough is also an issue for the side in their pursuit of the top six.
