The Blades' boss has responded to the negativity surrounding the club.

It has been a turbulent start to the season on and off the field for Sheffield United as the club aims to build on last season's underwhelming campaign.

Chris Wilder returned to Bramall Lane for a third time to replace the struggling Ruben Selles and did an admirable job of lifting the Blades to a 13th-placed finish, but the club have shown no signs of improvement so far this term.

There have even been reports of a potential points deduction, although owner Steven Rosen has suggested that is all noise caused by former owner Prince Abdullah.

With all the negativity surrounding the club, Wilder has responded emphatically ahead of Sheffield United's return to action after the international break.

Discomfort is growing at Bramall Lane after another poor start to the season as Sheffield United occupy 18th position, taking nine points from their opening eight Championship matches.

The Blades suffered a 2-1 defeat to Stoke City on the weekend, having led through Kalvin Phillips, and Wilder claimed it was far too early for fans to be making judgement after their boos at the Bet365 Stadium.

Wilder also said his side would come out fighting after the international break, which did not go down well with some supporters, who are clearly losing patience.

“The players are super tight and I'm super tight with them,” the 59-year-old told The Star, keen for the outside noise not to affect his group.

“So there's going to be no breaking, however many people want to try and break and chuck bombs in all over the place.

“There'll be no breaking of that. That trust between myself and that group of players out there ... I'm looking them in the eye and they're giving everything."

While there have been a handful of positive results, performances have been a concern, and the club will have to show improvement after the international break.

The Blades have scored the sixth-lowest number of goals (9) in the Championship, but worryingly have the fourth-lowest expected goals (xG) of any side, behind only Charlton Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Watford, according to Opta Analyst.

Furthermore, their 25 shots on target rank as the joint third-lowest in the division, and without their clinical finishing, things would be even worse.

Of course, the club lost much of its creativity and attacking spark over the summer, including Gus Hamer, Callum O'Hare and Andre Brooks, who contributed 19 Championship assists last term, and they have not been replaced.

Understandably, fans have been calling for more effort, fight and desire, and if anyone can rally the team, then surely it is Wilder.

What lies ahead for the Blades?

Sheffield United return to action on October 10 to face Lincoln City and embark on a favourable run of games that should see them pick up plenty of points.

After taking on the Imps at home, the Blades then face Portsmouth, Bristol City, Derby and Wrexham, with three of those sitting in the bottom half of the table.

This is a key set of fixtures and could be a turning point in the club's season, but if they fail to pick up many points and performances don't improve, then Wilder will have a lot to answer for.
