Chris Wilder Slams EFL For Congested Fixture List Ahead of Cup Tie | OneFootball

Sheffield United travel to Fleetwood Town on Wednesday evening for a third-round EFL Cup clash, with Chris Wilder admitting that the Blades will have little choice but to rotate their side amid an increasingly congested fixture schedule.

United are one of a number of EFL clubs being forced to negotiate a demanding run of fixtures just weeks into the new campaign, with the cup tie at Fleetwood arriving only three days after Sunday’s Championship defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Blades will then have to make the journey back to South Yorkshire before travelling again at the weekend, when they face Stoke City away in the early Championship kick-off on Saturday.

Sheffield United Boss on Fleetwood Town Cup Tie

Speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s cup tie, the United boss was particularly critical of the scheduling and admitted that his side will have to make changes to their team despite the desire to progress in the competition.

“Let’s get all of my moans and groans out of the way because I’m gonna be positive towards the players when they walk through the door to have a meeting in about 20 minutes time,” Wilder said. “The schedule is ridiculous. I think a couple of managers have pointed it out.

“The transfer window is ridiculous in August; having a game on a Tuesday when the window was still going on was ridiculous, and the fixture list is ridiculous.

“We all want to progress in the cup, I suppose that’s the price that we have to pay, and if we manage to get through a difficult cup tie on Wednesday night then we’ll be in the same situation.”

Wilder Warns of Injury Risk

The sheer volume of football being played is perhaps the biggest concern for Wilder, particularly with the season still in its early stages.

The Blades have already had to navigate a demanding opening period, and the Fleetwood fixture provides another example of how quickly matches are being stacked on top of one another.

Wilder believes the current schedule is contributing to the growing number of injuries being suffered across the EFL, while also making it harder for managers to establish a settled starting XI.

“The amount of games that we’re playing straight off just opens it up,” he continued. “No wonder clubs are picking up injuries. We’re not the only ones. There’s a lot of clubs picking up injuries and putting their players at risk of that.

“All the supporters pay good money to watch a team trying to get into a flow and try to get consistency, and not chopping and changing, and we’re going to have to do that on Wednesday night.”

With Stoke waiting just a few days later, Wilder is unlikely to risk his key players unnecessarily, particularly with the international break approaching.

Wilder was also asked what could realistically be done to address the issue, but the Sheffield United boss was hardly optimistic about the prospect of managers having their concerns heard. “I can’t do anything, I’m a football guy. They don’t take any notice of football guys,” he said. “I’ve seen on Sunday afternoon with the Manchester United vs Man City game; they don’t take any interest in what football people think, footballers, football managers, football coaches, so it really isn’t worth it.

“I concentrate on what I can control, which is my team and putting in performances like we did on Sunday afternoon.”

“They have massive budgets where they have squads of 25 and they have top top players,” Wilder explained. “The teams that compete for Europe, they’ve got squads to die for.

“They understand that because they’re in the Premier League and they have the ability to invest and buy and pay huge wages and have infrastructures to deal with all that. Obviously the lower down you go, it obviously filters down.”

Wednesday therefore presents another test of United’s squad depth, which was already under the microscope before the season began. They must find a way to navigate Fleetwood, potentially progress in the EFL Cup and then immediately turn their attention towards another away trip to Stoke in the Championship.
