Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, prompting immediate medical attention and concern across the stadium.

According to Superdeporte, the 64th-minute incident came without contact, with the 34-year-old clutching his chest as he fell, and team-mates and medics surrounding him.

After a 14-minute stoppage, the referee abandoned the match in the 78th minute with the score at 2-1. Eriksen regained consciousness at the stadium.

He was later described as well and left the pitch unaided, with his internal defibrillator appearing to activate correctly. He was unconscious only briefly, then recovered quickly and responded to staff.

The device is being analysed, which could help identify any underlying cause. It restored his consciousness.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on 12 June 2021 during the Euros. His life and career were in jeopardy, yet he returned to elite football. Denmark arranged friendlies in this FIFA window despite not qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Eriksen uses an implantable ICD, a defibrillator that can correct fibrillation with a shock. It is credited with saving his life on this occasion, and it is considered unlikely he will play again at a high level.
