Christian Eriksen terminates Wolfsburg contract | OneFootball

Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen is a free agent once again after terminating his contract with Wolfsburg.

Eriksen first joined Wolfsburg in 2025 after leaving Manchester United and went on to play 34 times for the German side, scoring three times and making nine assists but wasn't able to keep the team in the top flight.

Concerns for the 34-year-old's health remerged in June 2026 when they player collapsed during a match while on international duty in a friendly game with Ukraine. The game was stopped and abandoned although Eriksen was able to walk off the pitch.

"It was clear to us that the decision regarding his future lay with Christian," Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking said about Eriksen's departure..

"We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now complied with his request to terminate his contract.

"He has already experienced and achieved so much in his extraordinary career. This makes it all the more remarkable how approachable and down-to-earth he has been during his time at VfL. Despite his short spell here, he has left a lasting impression on his team-mates, the staff and the fans. We would like to thank Christian and wish him and his family all the very best from the bottom of our hearts."

Eriksen also spoke on his decision to leave the club: "Right now, it’s important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m glad we were able to find a solution together. 

"My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many ups and downs. I know the club is now in good hands to make its way back into the Bundesliga, and I’m convinced that VfL has a successful future ahead of it. 

"I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me at VfL and in Wolfsburg from the bottom of my heart. It was a great pleasure to play for you, and I’ll look back on this time with fond memories."
