CD Castellón are on the brink of an unprecedented milestone, as Brian Cipenga and Awer Mabil could become the club’s first players to appear at a World Cup while on the books.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the schedule now puts the focus on Cipenga, whose contract runs until 30 June.
DR Congo opened with a 1-1 draw against Portugal that strengthened their hopes of progression. Cipenga did not feature. His next chance arrives overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday, at 4.00.
Congo face Colombia in a tie that could prove decisive. Should the coach call on the Castellón winger, Cipenga could finally feature.
Mabil is at the tournament with Australia and already knows World Cup football, having been part of Qatar 2022. This time carries extra significance, as he has never done so while a CD Castellón player.
Mabil has not played in Australia’s opening two matches. Their final group game is against Paraguay on 25 June at 4.00, after defeat to the United States on matchday two. That fixture could determine their continuation and whether Mabil gets minutes.
The coincidence of both players appearing at the same tournament is extraordinary in the context of Castellón’s long history.
