Manchester City are delighted to announce the signing of Germany international defender Carlotta Wamser, subject to international clearance and a work visa.

The 22-year-old right back has joined from Bayer Leverkusen and pens a four-year deal with Andrée Jeglertz’s side - keeping her at the Club until the summer of 2030.

She arrives after a hugely successful spell in her homeland with teams such as SGS Essen, Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Koln before a 12-month stint at Leverkusen.

Wamser also has 14 caps to her name for Germany and has scored twice for her nation after progressing through their various age groups.

That includes being part of Christian Wuck’s side who reached the semi-finals of the 2025 UEFA Women’s European Championship, having also helped the Under-17s to Euro glory in 2019.

But now, her sparkling development will continue at Manchester City, as we aim to retain the Barclays Women’s Super League and FA Cup ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Speaking of her move to the Blues, Wamser said: “It feels very, very good [to be joining City]. I had a perfect welcome here and I already feel very good here. I look forward to my time here in Manchester.

“The English league is the best league in the world and Manchester City are one of the best clubs in the world.

“I feel like I need the next step for my career and I feel that I can develop as a player here very well. And I like the challenge as well, so I think it’s the perfect step for me right now to [move to] Manchester.”

On the addition of Wamser to City’s squad, Director of Football, Therese Sjögran added: “We are delighted to welcome Carlotta to the Club.

“She is a player we’ve admired for some time and know she will bring energy, passion and a willingness to learn to the team.

“For such a young, exciting talent to trust us with the next step of her career is something we feel conveys a strong message of what we are building here at City.

“We look forward to seeing Carlotta in City Blue and seeing her grow and develop during her time with us.”

DARING DEFENDER

Wamser’s style of play is the epitome of a hard-working full-back, and that tenacity was rewarded on one of the biggest stages for Germany.

The defender had made her senior debut in the build-up to EURO 2025 and started her nation’s opener against Poland on the bench, only to be introduced as a first half substitute due to Giulia Gwinn’s injury.

Her first outing at a major tournament, Wamser more than delivered and played a huge role in the game’s opening goal en route to a 2-0 win.

Germany came into the tie as heavy favourites but their opponents had held firm, until a moment of brilliance from Jule Brand, who rifled an unstoppable drive into the top corner from the edge of the area.

But it was made possible by Wamser’s anticipation and energy, with the then-21-year-old winning the ball deep in Poland’s half before squaring it to Brand for their nation’s first goal in a 2-0 win.

Our new signing never looked back, going on to feature in all but one of her nation’s remaining matches as Germany made the semis, with Wamser playing all 120 minutes of their last four bout with Spain.

A player with a huge desire and quality to take on her opponent and support the attack, her time playing in advanced areas is evident and fits well into City’s free-flowing style, which places emphasis on full-backs to get forward and create.

Defensively, though, Wamser is just as strong, commanding and athletic – an excellent ‘one v one’ defender.

She joins City at just 22, with a wealth of top level experience already under her belt but also a real hunger to prove herself on the biggest stage.

And with international team-mates Rebecca Knaak and Sydney Lohmann also at the Club, Carlotta will hope to hit the ground running and help the Blues hit new heights in 2026/27.
