Despite hopes at the start of the season of back-to-back promotions, Birmingham City find themselves languishing in lower mid-table under the guidance of Chris Davies.

It’s been a very poor run of form for the West Midlands outfit over the festive period, with Blues failing to win any of their last five second-tier matches.

Results away from home have been a particular concern, with Davies’ men suffering three consecutive away defeats to Southampton, Queens Park Rangers and most recently Watford, as Tom Ince’s hat-trick ensured another miserable afternoon on the road.

Meanwhile, Birmingham have also been halted at their usual fortress of St Andrew’s to Charlton Athletic and Derby County, leaving the club with serious work to do if they are to mount a push for the play-offs come the end of the term.

To realise this ambition, some Birmingham supporters are thinking about whether a change in the dugout needs to be made, particularly after the travelling supporters at Vicarage Road voiced their dismay towards the 40-year-old.

If the Blues hierarchy continue to keep Davies in charge, it could result in Birmingham being sucked into a relegation battle, with the club just seven points clear of the bottom three.

It’s certainly a stick or twist decision to be made by owner Tom Wagner, who has already had his struggles with changing bosses after the saga with John Eustace and Wayne Rooney in his first season as owner.

With this in mind, FLW’s Birmingham City fan pundit has discussed whether Chris Davies should be relieved of his duties, and how long he may have to turn Blues’ fortunes around in the Championship.

Chris Davies could be given until February to save his Birmingham City job

Speaking to Football League World, Birmingham City fan pundit Jason Moore believes Blues owner Tom Wagner may give Chris Davies until February to transform their fortunes, insisting the January transfer window could be a pivotal time for him to continue his current 18-month stint as boss.

Jason said: “So, I’ve said quite openly his time is probably up, but I don’t think Tom Wagner is going to pull the plug on his man yet. I think they’ve learnt their lessons after the John Eustace and Wayne Rooney stuff, so I think it’ll have to get really bad if they are going to do that.

“I think he’s got January to see who we bring in, see if results improve, and then I think he has halfway through February, maybe in the February time, I reckon he’s got six to eight weeks left, which is a lot of football left to play, and if they pull the plug between the middle to the end of February, our season is done then, so they can go and get their man, take their time like they did originally getting Davies in and go again next season.

“So, I think Davies has around until the middle to the end of February.”

Chris Davies has to find a quick solution to Birmingham City woes

With all the hype created by owner Tom Wagner, in turn with sign and sealed plans for a new stadium, Birmingham City are far from where they were expected to be after returning to the second-tier.

Although they have only just returned to the Championship, Blues have one of the richest owners in the division, and should be seeing much more consistently positive performances and results from a squad that received such significant investment over the course of last summer.

It’s all starting to go a bit pear-shaped under Davies at the moment, with the away form completely deserting them, while their last two home games have done little to inspire confidence under his leadership too.

Possessing players like Demarai Gray, Tommy Doyle and Jay Stansfield, the Blues squad should definitely be a lot higher placed than 17th, and you do get the feeling that Davies has taken the squad as far as he can.

Blues may need a new boss at the helm who has experience of winning promotion out of this division and can drag them back to the promised land.

However, patience should still be afforded at the moment, particularly when the squad can be added to at the turn of the year and could be the difference in seeing the club rise up the table.

February does seem a realistic timeframe for Davies to turn the tide in the Birmingham City dugout, but a change of manager should seriously be considered if it turns from bad to worse in the next month or so.
