Data analytics have certainly taken more prominence in football and particularly in France these last few months, with Toulouse showcasing how a statistical approach can help with recruitment to win titles. This week, Ligue 1 website have published the physical data for this past season, including the players and teams having run the longest and sprinted the most.
From and individual standpoint, Johan Gastien from Clermont is the player with the most kilometres run per match this season, having led the way last season already. With a score of 11.87km per game ran this year, the Clermontois tops the charts, ahead of Salis Abdul Samed (RC Lens – 11.7km/match) and Birama Touré (AJ Auxerre – 11.37km/match). The likes of Valentin Rongier, Jonathan David and Seko Fofana also feature on this chart.
Meanwhile, Rennes keep their crown in terms of distance covered per match per team this season, with an average of 118.9km/match. Reims (117.5), Lens (117.3) and Angers (117) are close behind. Bottom of the list is Paris Saint-Germain (110,4) only closely beaten by Montpellier (110,7).
When it comes to sprints per match, Brest’s Franck Honorat , who could be Lille-bound this summer, leads with an impressive 24 sprints per match. Zakaria Akboukhlal, Jonathan David and Caio Henrique are close behind, with 23, 22 and 21 sprints per match respectively.
Finally, it is no surprise to see high-intensity teams such Marseille and Lille high on the charts in terms of sprints per match. However, their levels do not match the 168 sprints per match completed by Lens, averaging 7 more sprints per game than the second on this list, Rennes. Franck Haise will no doubt be delighted to see these numbers.
